Every wedding shoe guide online says the same thing. Block heels, wedges, avoid anything fine. It is safe advice and it is not quite true. Whether a stiletto works outdoors has almost nothing to do with the shoe and almost everything to do with the ground. Here is how to tell the difference.
The short answer
Yes, with conditions. A fine heel is fine on a lawn when the ground is dry, the walking is short, and you have a set of heel stoppers in your bag. It is a poor choice on soft ground after rain, on gravel, or when the ceremony and the reception sit a field apart. Judge the ground, not the shoe.
What actually goes wrong
Three things, and only three. The heel sinks, which is the one everyone warns about. You walk differently to compensate, which is what actually makes your feet ache by eight o'clock. And the heel tip picks up grass and wet soil, which is a cleaning problem rather than an evening-ruining one.
All three are predictable. None of them require you to buy a shoe you do not want.
Ask one question about the venue
Where do the cars stop, and how far is it to the seats.
That is the whole assessment. A courtyard ceremony with fifteen metres of lawn is a different proposition to a meadow at the bottom of a hill. Look at the venue's own photographs, or ask whoever invited you. People are happy to answer, and it is a more useful question than what the dress code is.
Heel stoppers are not a compromise
Small clear caps that push onto the tip of the heel and widen the base. They cost less than a coffee, they are close to invisible in photographs, and they are the reason the sinking problem is largely solved. Put a pair in your clutch. Fit them when you arrive, take them off for the reception floor.
Match the material to the forecast
This is where most of the damage happens, and it gets almost no attention.
Suede is the most vulnerable to water. It is a beautiful choice for a dry evening and the wrong one if there will be dew on the grass at six. VALENTINA in royal blue suede is a shoe for a paved terrace and a summer night, not a damp field. Satin marks with water too, though it is more forgiving of a light brush against a lawn. Leather handles the outdoors best of the three.
If the forecast is uncertain, pick the leather.
The ankle tie does more than you think
A strap around the ankle changes how a heel behaves on uneven ground. It stops the small lateral movement that makes you tense your foot, which is the actual source of the ache. ALLEGRA laces up the ankle for exactly this reason. It is not decoration.
Do this the week before
Wear them indoors for an hour. Not five minutes. An hour tells you whether the fit is right while there is still time to change it.
