What Shoes to Pack for a Destination Wedding

The invitation says Puglia, or Mallorca, or somewhere in Provence. Three days, four events, one suitcase. Most packing guides are written for the bride, and the rest tell you to bring flats. Here is what actually works when you are a guest who intends to wear heels.

Two pairs, not four

One heel for the wedding itself. One flat or low sandal for everything else. That is the answer, and the reason people overpack is that they try to solve each event separately instead of choosing one heel that covers all of them.

The heel that does that job is usually a strappy sandal in a colour that is not trying to match anything. A neutral is safe and slightly boring. A colour is easier, because it stops looking like it belongs to one specific dress and starts looking deliberate.

How to pack a heel so it arrives intact

Stuff the toe with a rolled sock or tissue. This holds the shape and stops the upper creasing in transit.

Each shoe in its own dust bag, not the pair together, so the sole of one does not mark the satin of the other. Pack them heel to toe along the hinge side of the case, where there is least flex. Never at the top of a soft bag.

If the shoes are delicate and the case is checked, put them in your carry-on. Luggage goes missing at exactly the wrong moment.

What the climate does to your shoes

Heat and humidity are the two things nobody mentions.

Suede holds up well in dry heat and badly in humidity, where it can go patchy. Satin is stable but shows a water mark clearly, so a cocktail on a warm terrace is a real risk. Leather is the most forgiving in every direction, and it also breathes, which matters more than you would think across a six-hour reception in August.

For a hot, dry evening, LUNA in burnt orange suede is exactly the shoe. For anywhere coastal or humid, choose leather and keep the suede for the trip home.

The terrain question

Ask about the ceremony surface before you pack, not after you land. Cobbles, sand, gravel and lawn all behave differently and all of them are common at a European wedding.

Cobbles are the underrated hazard. A fine heel catches in the gap between stones, which is more dangerous than grass and impossible to fix on the day. If you are told cobbles, bring the ankle tie. ALLEGRA holds the foot in place so a caught heel does not become a turned ankle. If the ceremony is on a lawn, there is more on that in can you wear stilettos to an outdoor wedding.

Order early, not the week before

The single most common mistake is buying the shoes six days out.

Order at least three weeks ahead so there is room to exchange a size. Ours run on a narrower Italian last and we tell people to size up if they are between two, and the size guide has the EU, UK and US conversions. Shipping is complimentary worldwide in both directions, so getting the size right costs you time rather than money.

Questions we get asked

Can I wear the same heels to the rehearsal dinner and the wedding?
Yes. Different dress, same shoes, nobody notices and everybody does it.

Do I need a separate pair for the beach?
If there is a beach event, bring a flat sandal. No heel is the right answer on sand.

How do I stop new shoes rubbing when I have no time to break them in?
Wear them at home for an hour a day for a week. It is enough, and it is the only method that reliably works.
